Fungal Sinus Infection – Out-Of-The-Box Thinking

For decades, doctors believed that a sinus infection was only caused by bacteria.

However, now even the Mayo Clinic admits on its website that fungal infections could be a cause of sinus infections. We’ve come a long way for them to admit this!

Fungi Cause Worse Things Than Sinusitis

Back in 2001, I had my own television show on health and did a 13-part series of shows on mold in the home. I interviewed mold remediators, mold inspectors, mold researchers, and patients who were suffering from fungal infections that had become systemic and were seriously ill. These fungal infections the patients had often started in the sinuses and were due to high levels of mold in the home.

For example, one man had a water heater burst in his home, leaving about a foot of water sitting on the floor for about a week. As he was cleaning it up, the tissues of his own legs became waterlogged. He wore boots but even his boots at one point failed and for hours he was walking in the water contaminated with mold. Molds love to reproduce in areas such as this.

Skin is a barrier that prevents different invaders from entering the body but it has a limit as to how long it can keep things out when it’s soaked. Mold entered his body from the water and became a systemic fungal infection that ate away his sinuses, eyes, and tissues in his face. He ended up needing a prosthetic face, prosthetic eye, and went totally blind.

The sad part is that he needed multiple surgeries over the course of a few short months and had to spend much of his remaining life under the care of his wife and a caregiver. Each day and night his prosthetic face had to be hygienically prepared for him so that he wouldn’t develop one more infection.

It was only because of this man that medical doctors started to wake up to the potential health consequences of mold in the house. Many different types of mold can potentially live in your home – and are comfortably living and breeding in your home right now. The difference is that the levels of them are low enough not to cause serious conditions such as fungal sinus infection, breast cancer, tumors, constant fatigue, and serious lung problems.

Fungal Cause of Sinusitis is Overlooked

Surprisingly, many doctors still overlook the two causes of fungal sinus infection – 1) high mold counts in the home, and 2) too much antibiotic usage. Other causes include chemotherapy, diabetes, immunosuppressive drugs such as steroids, etc.

Symptoms of Fungal Sinusitis

The symptoms of fungal sinus infections include golden yellow mucus that’s stretchy like rubber cement, the feeling of fullness in the area of the sinuses, and the feeling of a lot of pressure. The fungi produce debris that collects in the sinuses and must be removed surgically.

There are different types of fungal sinus infections – fungal ball, allergic fungal sinusitis, acute or chronic fulminant fungal sinusitis, and granulomatous fungal sinusitis. Most of them require surgery to clean out the area of the fungi but also include systemic antifungal treatments that are quite harsh on the body and have side effects.
