Kidney Disease Diet Depends On The Type Of Kidney Disease

Kidney Disease Initiated by High Blood Pressure

The standard kidney disease diet for high blood pressure used by the medical profession is the DASH Diet. This is a 1500 mg or 2000 mg low sodium diet, depending on your condition and your calorie level for the day.

Glomerular Diseases of the Kidney

Glomerular diseases of the kidney are ones where the kidneys are damaged by infections, autoimmune disorders and disorders where sclerosis is common. Too much protein in the urine may characterize these diseases. Blood in the urine is also a characteristic of glomerular diseases. Thus, a diet that reduces inflammation and is full of antioxidants for their infection-busting properties is called for with glomerular diseases.

Polycystic Kidney Disease

In one congenital disease called polycystic kidney disorder, the kidney becomes full of cysts. As the cysts grow, the kidney function decreases and can eventually lead to death. The type of diet eaten by those with this disorder is dependent on their body’s ability to manage sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein levels.

Protect Your Kidneys So You Don’t Need a Kidney Disease Diet

Knowing this information now should make you think about what you can do now to protect your kidneys. Here are some guidelines:

1. Stop eating very salty foods. Check labels of all foods you eat. If you see that a food has 350 mg or more of sodium per serving, replace it with one that contains less sodium.

2. Stop buying so many processed foods. These are generally too high in sodium, fat and calories.

3. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet. You can find information on this on our site.

4. Learn about AGEs. These are advanced glycation endproducts and much more damaging than free radicals. Studies show that a diet low in AGEs was exceptionally helpful for those on dialysis. AGEs cause damage to every organ in the body. AGEs are found in all processed foods; one example is hot dogs, which have thousands of AGEs. AGEs are multiplied exponentially once they get into the body and cause damage and rapid aging to organs. The foods highest in AGEs are pizza, hot dogs, and boxed cereals. Studies have shown that AGEs rapidly destroy the kidneys and in dialysis patients, the AGEs are responsible for a bad prognosis.

5. Eat a diet of natural foods – organic fruits and vegetables, pasture-raised meats from animals not given grains, nuts, and seeds, and A2 dairy products.
