Make Your Home An Allergy “Trigger-Free Zone”

Herbal Helpers

There are many simple ways to let the plant kingdom work its wonders for your allergies. Make a strong cup of tea with a half-teaspoon each of stinging nettle and peppermint to relieve symptoms and reduce swelling in the throat and sinuses. Float three drops each of Eucalyptus and Rosemary essential oil in a bowl of steaming hot water, hold your head over the steam and cover with a towel to make a steam tent. Breathe in the soothing vapors for five minutes, then dip a washcloth in the cooled water, place over eyes and relax.

Water is Your Best Friend

If you suffer from pollutants, air-borne allergens, or synthetic chemicals, water can be a powerful tool to keep them at bay. Be diligent about washing your hands, and refrain from touching your face during the day. Stay hydrated as water helps your body rid itself of allergens and toxins. Sleep well by using a Neti Pot before bed to gently cleanse the sinuses and flush away the pollutants you have been exposed to all day.

Supplement the Immune System

Adding a few key vitamins and minerals to your daily routine can help your body fight off attacks during allergy season. Consider taking up to 1000mg of Vitamin C, a B Complex formula, and a Calcium Magnesium supplement. Probiotics support immune function, and warm or spicy foods like ginger, jalapeno and wasabi can boost your body’s natural ability to stay healthy. Swipe a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil mixed with a teaspoon of almond oil over your nostrils to kill bacteria and keep out particulates.

Take a Breather

Even though the slightest trigger can send you into a sneezing fit, your breath is actually one of your best healing tools. When your immune system is on high alert during allergy season, it often over-reacts to things that aren’t really a threat and can’t dial it down after a big attack. A daily breathing practice can help re-set your immune alert to something a little less touchy because when we breathe consciously and deeply, we are giving our body subtle cues that we’re safe. Take a few minutes every morning and evening to just breathe deeply, and let your immune system have a well earned break.

I have seen many clients greatly reduce the severity and frequency of their allergy attacks. Do what you can to make your home a safe place for you and your family and stop being held hostage by your allergies.
