The Safe Way To Sinus Flush

3. Return head to upright position and very, very gently blow your nose into tissue.

4. To repeat on other side, hold Neti pot in left hand and position spout inside left nostril; lower your head forward and tilt it to the right, allowing the water to run into the left nostril and then out the right nostril into the sink.

5. Return head to upright position and very, very gently blow your nose into tissue.

Take Care

Be sure to always clean your Neti pot after each use. I just pop mine in the dishwasher. Always measure out the right amount of salt, as using too much can irritate and burn. The temperature of the water must be just right, as too cold will not move any mucous, and too hot can burn the tissue inside your nose.

If you start feeling like you’re choking, don’t panic – just stop and continue to let the water drain from your nose. There is not that much water in your sinuses and it will all either run out of your nose or go down your throat. This usually only happens once or twice (unless you have to sneeze in the middle of the process) until you get the hang of doing a sinus flush.

I use a Neti pot almost once per week, depending on how I feel. In the dry summer months, I use it to clear mucous and soothe the delicate tissue of the nose, while in the winter I use my Neti pot to clear a stuffy nose and flush out viruses and bacteria.

You know how you get that little tickle in your nose or back of your throat and you think, “Uh, oh, I hope I’m not getting sick!” That is when to do a sinus flush to help wipe out an invader before it has a chance to do any damage. If you are in the middle of a full blown cold or flu, using a Neti pot can decrease the severity and duration of your illness, plus make you feel so much better. Happy flushing!
