Mindful Eating Tips To Prevent Acid Reflux

Here is a list of some foods to avoid to help prevent acid reflux or heartburn.

* No iced drinks 30 minutes before a meal – consuming large amounts of water or iced beverages before a meal dilutes the digestive enzymes that are necessary to break down your food

* No caffeine or carbonated drinks

* No fried, greasy or processed foods

* No sugar

* No citrus fruits or juices

* No tomatoes

* No rich sauces or gravies

* No spicy foods

* No creamy cheeses

* No fatty meats

* No raw onions

Enjoy What You Do Eat

When was the last time you sat down and really savored your food? I mean taking a moment to appreciate and chew it? Did you look at the colors on your plate, smell the delicious flavors and luxuriate in the texture of it all? Or do you scarf your food out of a bag with hardly a breath in between gulps and rush off to the next thing on your to-do list? If it’s the latter, you are creating indigestion with every bite.

When I give homework to my massage school students, one of their assignments is to be present with their food and drink for one entire day. I ask them to sit down before eating, to use all their senses and be thankful for what is on their plate. I ask them to eat slowly and chew thoroughly rather than stuffing it down without really noticing the wonderful experience of nourishing themselves. In their homework they often report that their food tastes better, is easier to digest and that they feel more energy. All from just taking their time and being mindful during meals.

I encourage you to really pay attention to what and how you are nourishing your body. After all, you are what you eat, and who wants to be tasteless, boring, when you can be delectable and energizing?
