4. Celery

A medicinal constituent found in celery, apiin, was found to enhance the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. When these antioxidant free radical quenchers are enhanced in the liver, the liver can protect itself and regenerate itself. Celery may seem like a boring vegetable to eat, but try steaming it – it ends up becoming one of the sweeter vegetables.


5. Papayas and avocados can repair a damaged liver

The richest source of glutathione in plants is avocado. Papaya and avocado contain a substance called glutathione S-transferase placental form (GSTP1), which is very helpful for your liver. The compound detoxifies polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by activating this enzyme. How easy is it to eat these two foods?


6. Raw cow’s milk

There are many people who won’t touch raw cow’s milk because they are afraid of developing diseases such as brucellosis. However, for centuries, people consumed it and stayed healthy.

There are other glutathione compounds besides glutathione S-transferase that are helpful for your liver. One of them is an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase. In one study in Japan, researchers found that raw cow’s milk contained glutathione peroxidase as well as selenium, two important substances for liver function. About 12% of the selenium was found complexed with the glutathione enzyme. However, in pasteurized milk, the protective glutathione peroxidase enzyme was lost.


7. Citrus Fruits

Citrus constituents such as nobiletin, a flavonoid, prevented liver injuries induced by the strong chemical carbon tetrachloride. Its mode of action was that it stopped the production of TNF-alpha and nitric oxide. Do you eat citrus fruits at least a few times a week?


8. Resveratrol

A high fat diet is a stress on the liver. However, certain substances will protect the liver from damage induced by a high fat diet. One of them is resveratrol. In a Chinese study, resveratrol fed to mice on a high fat diet for 13 weeks lowered the levels of oxidative stress in the mice. It also stopped the turning on of the genes that cause more inflammatory products to be released and increased the regulatory T cells that regulate the inflammation.

Resveratrol is commercially made from the herb (and weed) called bindweed. Bindweed contains many more times the amount of resveratrol than red wine that you hear advertised on television. And it’s another way to protect your liver.
