Digestive Etiquette

It’s no wonder that so many people suffer from nausea after meals given the way that Western culture views food consumption. There is a predominating practice of eating on-the-go during the day and then over-eating in the evening. Failing to eat mindfully and moderately is a recipe for indigestion in itself, and adopting a few practices that support proper digestion can help you enjoy your meals more fully.

* Keep a journal – write down your food and beverage consumption for a few weeks along with any symptoms of nausea you may experience

* Eat mindfully – chew your food slowly and allow time after a meal for proper digestion before resuming activity

* Don’t skip meals – eat a few small meals throughout the day rather than one or two large ones

* Cool it down – Consume foods that are cold or room temperature if you are nauseated by the smell of hot or warm foods.

After Dinner Ritual

Giving your body time to rest after eating even small meals Allow for a twenty minute digestive period after eating with your head elevated about 12 inches above your feet before becoming active again to promote proper digestion and reduce nausea symptoms.

* Digestive Herbs – make an after dinner tea by steeping 1 teaspoon of caraway, fennel seeds, fresh ginger or mint in hot water for 10 minutes; strain well and drink

* Tummy Tamer – mix 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 4oz of water and sip slowly

* Essential Oils – mix two drops each of peppermint, fennel and lavender oils in a small amount of massage cream and apply to abdomen in gentle, clockwise strokes

* Breathing Exercises – inhale deeply for a count of four and exhale completely; continue for one or two minutes to promote easy digestion

A little meal planning combined with some digestion supportive activities can be just the cure for a little nausea from time to time. If you are experiencing intense vomiting for more than a few hours, consult a physician to rule out a more serious disorder. However, most cases of nausea are not only manageable but preventable, which means you can enjoy mealtimes again without dreading the after-effects.
