Fruits, other than citrus and strawberries, are beneficial. Most fruits contain high levels of vitamin C. In a number of studies, vitamin C has been shown to reduce asthmatic symptoms and improve lung function.

While many experts recommend a vegan or vegetarian diet, some recommend that deep oily, cold water fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon be ingested regularly if a fish allergy is not present. The fish are rich sources of essential fatty acids which reduce inflammation, decrease airway sensitivity, and improve lung function.

Limit or eliminate the following products from your diet as they can exacerbate the symptoms of asthma. Salt, red wine, yeasts, packaged sweets, coffee, dairy, white flour and junk food. An exception to this list is coffee. A strong cup of coffee may help to relieve an asthma attack until professional help can be obtained.

It is essential that you get good quality, regular sleep in order to reduce fatigue, feel well, and have your immune system working efficiently. Try elevating your head on pillows. Some people sleep in a recliner so that they can breathe better. Only do this on nights when you are having difficulty breathing as you cannot stretch out fully and move freely in a recliner.

Learn relaxation techniques. Consider what you can do to reduce stress in your life. Do not neglect the spiritual aspects of your life.

Many people with asthma are reluctant to exercise as they have had episodes of increased distress during periods of exercise. Check with your health care provider before beginning an exercise program. Include an aerobic component, such as walking, unless your health care provider states that you should not exercise. Begin slowly. Simply walking in the house is an excellent start. Aerobic exercise offers many benefits including increased lung capacity, opening up of the airways, improves stamina, reduced stress and much more.
