How To Increase Breast Milk Production Naturally

Fenugreek seed stimulates breast milk production and is effective. It’s easy to take because it can be easily consumed in capsules. And the herb also helps improve blood sugar regulation.

The herb may also cause the skin and urine to smell like maple syrup. (This is a nice smell.) The aroma emanates from the compound called sotoion, which causes no harm whatsoever.

Dosage is 3500 mg per day or more. The correct dosage is achieved when your urine smells like maple syrup. This is achieved with two to four capsules (580-610 mg) consumed three times per day. Milk production starts in 24 to 72 hours. It’s listed on the FDA Generally Regarded as Safe List (GRAS).

The only type of person who should not take fenugreek is someone who has a peanut or chickpea allergy. Many foods cross-react with each other. For example, those with a cashew allergy shouldn’t eat mangoes. Fenugreek cross-reacts with other foods in the same family.

What the Naysayers are Saying

Scientists at the University of Illinois in Chicago understand that one of the top reasons why women stop breastfeeding is lack of milk. Their milk supply dries up. They don’t really like the fact that women turn to using herbs to boost their milk supply, because they say that the herbs are untested. This seems to be a naïve statement, as women were using herbs to boost milk production in all different cultures from the beginning of time. They also say that there’s a lack of scientific evidence of the safety of these herbs.

After searching through the PubMed database since it first began, the scientists found six different studies of women using herbs to increase breast milk. Interestingly, they made a mistake in their reporting of the herbs and wrote milk thistle instead of Holy Thistle. The other herbs mentioned were the following: Shatavari, torbangun, fenugreek, and a combination of herbs. Five of the studies found an increase in breast milk production. Yet they do not recommend using herbs for boosting milk production because they say the sample sizes were too small or the study was flawed because multiple herbs were used. The problem with this type of thinking is that herbs are rarely used individually; they are more effective when combined with other herbs.

So you see that really, those in medical science without a background in herbs cannot be making legitimate decisions on their usage. And one more thing – according to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine in their position statement on breastfeeding, the field of medicine has never even recognized breastfeeding as a specialty of medicine.
